My new, old camera!

Nikon FM2n_1

It is the first SLR camera I’ve ever bought.

It has been with me for about three (3) months now, with a Nikon Series E 50mm f/1.8 lens mounted on it. Series E lenses were like the entry level lenses for the Nikon System, and cheaper than the better Nikkor lenses.

I think it was left inside a cabinet, unused for years. When i bought it three (3) months ago, it was little dirty, lens had some fungi and the shutterspeeds were erratic. I took it for a spin the day after to test the camera, and to see if it has more problems, like needing new light seals, focusing problems, etc.

These are the very first pictures i took with this camera.

Its such a joy to use! The experience was amazing. Winding the film after tripping the shutter, the manual focusing, the shutterspeed knob, the aperture ring, and pressing the shutter, everything is just awesome!

I decided to take it to a camera repair shop at Manila, and have it Cleaned, Lubricated and Adjusted (CLA) because the shutter stuck up a few times while shooting. I decided to load the camera with my first black and white film too, rating it one stop higher because it was getting dark and there won’t be any day light left for me to shoot. Here are some of my pics from that roll.

After the CLA, shutterspeeds are now perfectly working, the lens is clean and bright, the viewfinder isn’t cloudy anymore, and it has never failed me ever since.

It now bears signs of use, some paint loss here and there, a few marks and scratches, although, it irritates, it kind of grew on me. I mean, the camera never looked even better, more like it now has a soul.

I carry it everywhere I go. It has been my constant companion, waiting, and hoping to catch moments as well as memories with it.
